Rooted Magazine

ROOTED is a student publication that aims to provide insight into the lives of those in the multicultural program at PLNU. I pioneered the creation of this magazine to generate understanding and unification within the entire community on campus. I was inspired to share my fellow classmates’ personal stories because I found myself moved by their narratives of struggles, hopes, and victories. Through this project, I hope to leave a legacy of compassion and awareness.

Strategic Solution

Before creating any digital files, I opened my sketchbook to plan designs and layouts. For each article, I took notes on key points and ideas to guide my design decisions. I designed each article to reflect the content and personality of the writer while staying true to the overall visual style. To ensure each page was composed with respect to balance and white space, I constantly printed drafts and thumbnails to make physical notes and edits that I then translated into my digital files.

Fall 2021

For this semester’s issue, we explored the concept of self-expression and the importance of using one’s voice. I led the team as the Art Director and Publication Manager. I also contributed an art piece and story to this issue.

Spring 2021

For this semester’s issue, I wanted to shed light on the internal and external struggles of each writer, break the barriers that social distancing has placed between us, and re-establish a sense of connection. I led the team as the Editor-in-Chief and Art Director.

Fall 2019

For this semester’s issue, I encouraged readers to reflect on what their definition of culture is and the impact their upbringing has had on the development of their identity. I led the team as the Editor-in-Chief and Art Director.
