The Final Straw

Single-use plastics are dangerous — polluting our waters, endangering marine ecosystems, and potentially exposing toxins to aquatic life. Each year, millions of turtles, seabirds, and other wildlife die from complications directly related to plastic consumption. As one the most widely used and disposed of products, plastic straws are often found making their way into oceans around the world. I wanted to shed light on this prevalent topic by designing a digital experience to educate and challenge people to join in the battle to combat plastic pollution.

Focus: UX, UI, Illustration

Deliverables: Website, Mobile Page

Client: Self-Initiated

Strategic Solution

To emulate the overwhelming accumulation of plastic pollution in our waters, I utilized a parallax scrolling technique on a single-page website. By blurring specifically chosen illustrations, I aimed to create a sense of depth that reflected the vastness of the ocean. At the climax of the narrative, a single plastic straw transforms into a fish accompanied by rays of light that pierce through the dark waters bringing in a sense of hopefulness. Not only was it important for me to address the reality of our world’s current condition, but also to encourage users that change is possible.

Stronger Together

Amidst all the despair and concern surrounding the increase in plastic pollution, I wanted to communicate a sense of hope. Although one’s actions may seem small, together, they combine to make a significant difference in the world.
