Studio Ghibli Journals

Studio Ghibli is a beloved studio originating from Japan with a massive fan base worldwide. Hayao Miyazaki is often referred to as the “Walt Disney of Japan.” Spirited Away, Ponyo, and Kiki’s Delivery Service are a few of the many animated films this studio has produced over the past years. Studio Ghibli has a special place in my heart because I grew up watching and admiring Miyazaki’s ability to bring his audiences on unforgettable journeys through fantasy lands or placid meadows. In my own artistic style, I recreated some of my favorite characters and designed journals for animation fans alike to enjoy and use.

Strategic Solution

To capture the essence of each character, I researched and collected various references that guided my choice of pose, lighting, style, and composition. After developing thumbnail sketches and color studies, I moved forward to fully rendering each figure. It was paramount to translate each character into my personal artistic style while ensuring they were still recognizable as Studio Ghibli characters. For the backgrounds, I selected iconic environments from each movie to provide context and frame the figure.

Little Details

Inside each journal, I featured a small character and decorative details derived from their respective movie. These journals were developed for the avid Studio Ghibli fan or casual note-taker to enjoy.
